![]() it's all free so you're not tied down to either spending $15,000 for MATLAB or working for an institution that can afford it. There are also a number of Python modules (probably most built around NumPy) that support computational neuro simulation and other bio simulation (as well as plenty of other areas of science). Not to throw a spanner into your 2 option list, but have you considered Python as well? NumPy provides similar basic array/matrix functionality to matlab and SciPy provides functionality like some of the MATLAB toolboxes. It's far more worthwhile to get the specific instruction in Matlab and pick up the general stuff as you go along, than it is to learn the general stuff and then try to apply it in Matlab. The java class might give you a little better introduction to general programming ideas if you're unfamiliar with them, but the intro-level ideas that are useful outside java are pretty easy to pick up on your own. I'm always thinking of and doing things nobody else around me can do, because I have that Mathematica skill that's very uncommon in my area of study. ![]() I took classes with both Matlab and Mathematica and ended up sticking with Mathematica, but it doesn't really matter - the point is that getting good with any of these math languages will give you a good edge over your competition in biology. Matlab is a less common skill and an extremely useful one in pretty much any scientific career. There aren't many applications for java in biology, period, except for things that most other languages would work just as well for. And there really aren't a lot of useful applications for intro-level java in a bio career. There are CS majors for that taking a java 101 type class isn't going to put you into competition. You're not going to become a professional java programmer. So, r/biology, what do you think? Thanks in advance! Of course, I could learn a lot of these things on my own time, but learning in a class is just sooo much better. On the other hand, I've heard that Java has a lot more general applications that could provide more opportunities for work later, and the compsci would give me a better understanding of programming in general that could transfer over to a lot of other things. My advisor recommended the matlab class because it's used a lot more in computational science work, plus it'll be useful for some of my other classes I'm taking. Thanks to requirements and such, I only have room for either another intro compsci class, that goes further into java and general programming, or an engineering class about matlab. I'm not entirely sure yet -what- I wanna do when I graduate in January though (definitely not grad school yet). I've recently realized, through taking computational neuro classes and an intro computer science class, that I really like the computational/programming side of science and would like to develop these skills as much as I can before I graduate. Hi, I'm a neuroscience major about to enter my last semester. ![]() Please label your submissions with user flair after submitting them.
